    Abstract
Stories, like living organisms, adapt in order to survive and be reproduced. Taking a socio-historical perspective and drawing on memetics, feminism, and textual analysis, this thesis studies ten literary and cinematic versions of the "Beauty and the Beast" fairy tale from the eighteenth to the twentieth century in order to expose the nature of the relationship between literature and culture.
