    Abstract
    The thesis explores the evolution and effectiveness of financial intermediation in rural areas in terms of reducing poverty, focusing mostly on South African's Limpopo Province. An empirical study about the effectiveness of microlending in that region shows positive developments in the lives of the borrowers.
