Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the historical analogues and digressions in the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf. Focusing on the Danes, Geats and Swedes as well as the peace-weavers and the Finnsburg Episode, it seeks to explain how the history and the digressions contribute to a unified narrative of the life and times of the titular hero.
