Abstract

This Honors Thesis examines the role of Virgil’s Camilla throughout the second half of the Aeneid. As a skilled horsewoman, fierce warrior, and exotic foreigner, Camilla stands out in the text as a liminal character existing in between the realms of what is real and imaginary. This work is divided into three sections: the detailed background of Camilla, the ancient views of horsemanship, and a close reading of Camilla’s scenes, with a special focus on her aristeia (11.648-‐724).
